Luke 2:27

And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

Luke 2:27 (KJV)

This verse records the moment when Simeon, led by the Holy Spirit, entered the temple and encountered the infant Jesus. Mary and Joseph had brought the child to present Him to the Lord and to fulfill the Law of Moses concerning purification after childbirth, an event that took place forty days after His birth.

The phrase “by the Spirit” indicates that the Holy Spirit directed Simeon to be present at that precise moment. This same Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die before seeing the Lord’s Christ (Luke 2:26). The parents’ action of bringing Jesus “to do for him after the custom of the law” shows their faithful obedience to God’s commandments, even though Jesus was the sinless Son of God.

The law required the presentation of the firstborn male to the Lord and an offering for purification, as prescribed in Leviticus 12:1-8 and Exodus 13:2. By fulfilling these requirements, Mary and Joseph demonstrated their devotion and set the stage for Simeon’s recognition of the Messiah.

The presentation of the child in the temple aligns with Malachi 3:1, which speaks of the Lord suddenly coming to His temple. The surrounding passage (Luke 2:22-38) makes clear that Jesus is the long-awaited Savior. Simeon, guided by the Spirit, declares the child to be the salvation prepared for all people, and the prophetess Anna also gives thanks and proclaims the child to all who await Jerusalem’s redemption.

This encounter underscores the continuity between the Old Testament law and the coming of the Messiah. Jesus is brought into the temple to fulfill the law’s requirements, yet He is the one who will ultimately fulfill the law’s true purpose.

Luke 2:27 invites believers to trust in the Holy Spirit’s guidance, even in the ordinary moments of life. It also calls for faithful obedience to God’s Word, as modeled by Mary and Joseph, and reminds us that God orchestrates circumstances to accomplish His redemptive plan.

This verse captures the divine orchestration behind Jesus’ early life and highlights themes of Holy-Spirit guidance, faithful observance of the Law, and prophetic fulfillment. It reminds us that God’s promises are fulfilled in His perfect timing, and that the Spirit still leads those who wait on Him.
