Luke 2:24

And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Luke 2:24 (KJV)

Luke 2:24 records the offering Mary and Joseph brought when they presented the infant Jesus at the temple. The law referred to is the Law of Moses, specifically the requirement in Leviticus 12:8. According to that law, a woman who gave birth to a son was considered ceremonially unclean for a set period. After the days of her purification were complete, the parents were to bring an offering to the temple.

The standard offering was a lamb and a young pigeon or turtledove. However, the law made provision for those of modest means: if she could not afford a lamb, she could bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. Mary and Joseph brought the pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, which shows their humble economic circumstances. This offering was not for Jesus’ sin; it was part of the mother’s purification after childbirth, as the law required.

Luke 2:24 highlights the faithfulness of Mary and Joseph in obeying God’s commands, even in humble circumstances. It reminds readers that God accepts the offerings of those with limited means and that salvation is accessible to all, regardless of social status. The verse invites reflection on obedience to God’s commands and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises.

The humble offering of two pigeons points to the deeper truth that Jesus came to bring salvation to the poor and the lowly. His parents’ obedience set the stage for His life of identification with the common people. This verse encourages believers to trust that God values faithful obedience over costly display, and that His promises are fulfilled in His perfect timing.
