Luke 2:22

Listen to this article

“And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord.”

Cultural Background:In Jewish culture, it was customary for a woman to undergo a period of purification after giving birth. According to the Law of Moses (Leviticus 12:1-8), a woman who gave birth to a male child would be considered ceremonially unclean for forty days. At the end of this period, she was required to bring an offering to the Temple in Jerusalem for her purification.

Mary’s Obedience:Luke 2:22 highlights the faithfulness and obedience of Mary and Joseph to the religious customs of their time. Despite being the parents of the Messiah, they adhered to the requirements of the Law without exception. This demonstrates their commitment to honouring God’s commandments.

Presentation of Jesus:The verse also mentions that Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. This presentation refers to the dedication or consecration of Jesus to God. According to Jewish tradition, the firstborn male child was considered holy to the Lord and had to be presented in the Temple (Exodus 13:2,12). It was a symbolic act acknowledging that the child belonged to God.

Simeon and Anna:Following the presentation, Luke’s Gospel records the encounters with Simeon and Anna in the Temple (Luke 2:25-38). Simeon, a devout and righteous man, had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had seen the Lord’s Christ. When he saw Jesus, he took Him in his arms and blessed God, recognising Him as the fulfilment of God’s promise (Luke 2:29-32). Anna, a prophetess, also recognised Jesus and spoke of Him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:38).

Messianic Implications:Luke 2:22 sets the stage for the revelation of Jesus as the promised Messiah. Through Mary and Joseph’s obedience, Jesus is presented in the Temple, and Simeon and Anna bear witness to His significance. This event foreshadows Jesus’ purpose and mission, as later revealed in His ministry, death, and resurrection.

In summary, Luke 2:22 portrays Mary and Joseph fulfilling the requirements of the Law by presenting Jesus in the Temple after Mary’s purification. This act of obedience emphasises their devotion to God and sets the stage for the recognition of Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.
