Leviticus 12:1

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Leviticus 12:1 (KJV)

Leviticus records the laws God gave to Israel through Moses. Chapter 12 deals with purification after childbirth. This verse is a short introduction, showing that God is speaking to Moses to give him a message. The words prepare the reader for the instructions that follow in Leviticus 12:2-8.

This opening phrase is a common pattern in Leviticus. It marks the start of a new divine communication. The same formula appears many times in the book. It reminds us that the laws are not Moses’ own ideas; they come directly from the Lord. Moses is the mediator, receiving God’s words and passing them to the people.

The phrase “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying” has two main parts. First, it names the speaker: the LORD, the covenant name of God, stressing that the message is holy and binding. Second, it names the listener: Moses, whom God chose as His servant and prophet. Their conversation was unique in Israel’s history, highlighting the closeness between God and Moses.

The verse also points to the content of the message. God is about to give laws about childbirth and purification. These were not human customs but divine commands. The people were to obey them because they came from God. The verse invites the reader to pay attention; what follows is God’s own instruction.

This introductory formula connects Leviticus to the rest of the Pentateuch. In Exodus 25:1, God speaks to Moses with the same words before the tabernacle instructions, showing that God guided Israel step by step. The laws about childbirth in Leviticus 12 also follow the dietary laws in Leviticus 11, moving from clean and unclean food to clean and unclean human life.

Christians today are not bound by the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament, yet this verse still teaches important truths. God still speaks through Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. We should listen with the same attention that Israel gave to Moses. Obedience remains a mark of true faith; when God commands, He expects a response.

This verse also reminds us of the value of every stage of life. Childbirth is a normal human event, yet God gave laws about it. He cares about the details of our lives; nothing is too small for His concern. We can bring every part of our daily experience to Him, for He is near and He speaks.

Consider how you hear God’s voice. Do you read the Bible as His message to you? Do you obey what He has already shown you? The same God who spoke to Moses still speaks today. His words are trustworthy and life-giving. Let this simple verse encourage you to listen carefully and respond with a willing heart.
