Luke 3:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:42

“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,”

Luke 3:21 is a significant verse in the Gospel of Luke, as it describes the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. This event marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and reveals important truths about His identity and mission. Let’s explore the verse in detail:

Baptism of Jesus:The verse states that “Jesus also being baptized.” This emphasizes that Jesus, although sinless, willingly submitted Himself to the act of baptism. His baptism serves as an example for His followers to follow in obedience to God’s commands.

Praying:As Jesus was baptized, He was also praying. This highlights the importance of prayer in His life and signifies His communion with God the Father. Prayer was a regular practice in Jesus’ ministry, demonstrating His dependence on and relationship with the Father.

The Heaven was opened:Following Jesus’ baptism and prayer, the heavens were opened. This event is a powerful manifestation of God’s presence and divine approval. The opening of heaven symbolizes the unveiling of God’s favour, signifying the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry and His anointing by the Holy Spirit.

Overall, Luke 3:21 presents a pivotal moment in Jesus’ life, where His baptism marked the initiation of His public ministry. It highlights Jesus’ obedience to God’s will, His reliance on prayer, and the divine confirmation of His mission through the opening of heaven. This verse holds spiritual significance for believers, reminding them of the importance of following Jesus’ example, seeking God in prayer, and recognising His divine approval and empowerment in their lives.
