Luke 3:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:08
Listen to this article

And Iesus himselfe began to be about thirty yeeres of age, being (as was supposed) the sonne of Ioseph, which was the sonne of Heli, Luke 3:23 (KJV)

Prior to this verse Luke presents a detailed genealogy of Jesus that stretches back to Adam. The purpose of this genealogy is to establish Jesus’ lineage and to connect Him with the promises made to Israel. The list concludes with Joseph, who is identified as the son of Heli.

Jesus’ Age: Luke notes that Jesus began His public ministry when He was approximately thirty years old. This age is significant because, according to Jewish tradition, a man became eligible for service in the priestly tribe of Levi at thirty (Numbers 4:3). In the New Testament Jesus is presented as the High Priest of the New Covenant, and His ministry beginning at this age reflects His authority and fulfills the pattern of divine timing.

“As was supposed”: Luke records that Jesus was “as was supposed” the son of Joseph. This phrase indicates that Joseph was not Jesus’ biological father, since Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary (Luke 1:26‑38). By using this wording Luke acknowledges the human perception of Jesus’ earthly lineage while affirming His divine origin.

Son of Heli: Luke’s reference to Joseph as the son of Heli differs from Matthew’s genealogy, which names Jacob as Joseph’s father (Matthew 1:1‑17). A common explanation is that Matthew records the legal or royal lineage through Jacob, whereas Luke records the biological lineage, possibly through Heli, who may have been Mary’s father.

Overall, Luke 3:23 provides important contextual information about Jesus’ age at the start of His public ministry and highlights His unique status as the Son of God. It also reminds readers that Jesus’ genealogy fulfills messianic prophecies and establishes His rightful place as the long‑awaited Messiah.
