Whose fanne is in his hand, and he will thorowly purge his floore, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaffe he will burne with fire vnquencheable. Luke 3:17 (KJV)

Luke 3:17 is spoken by John the Baptist as he prepares the way for Jesus. In this proclamation John employs agricultural imagery to describe the coming judgment and to draw a clear distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.

The “fan” mentioned is a winnowing fan, a tool used to separate grain from chaff. By saying that the fan is in His hand, John points to Jesus as the one who will execute the final judgment over all people.

The phrase “thoroughly purge his floor” (also expressed as “cleanse his floor”) signifies the judgment that will separate wheat from chaff. Wheat represents those who belong to God’s kingdom, while chaff symbolizes those who reject God’s ways.

Jesus will gather the wheat into His garner or barn, indicating the gathering of the righteous into the kingdom of God. This imagery points to the ultimate salvation and inclusion of those who have embraced Christ and His teachings.

Conversely, the chaff will be burned with “unquenchable fire.” This depicts the eternal punishment awaiting the unrighteous and underscores the serious consequences of rejecting God’s salvation.

The passage serves as a sobering reminder that a final judgment awaits every person. It urges believers to examine their lives, align themselves with God’s righteousness, and embrace the teachings of Christ, which lead to salvation and eternal life.

While the verse warns of severe consequences for those who turn away, it also offers encouragement to the faithful. The righteous are assured that they will be gathered safely into God’s kingdom, where they will find security and peace.

In summary, Luke 3:17 highlights the themes of judgment, separation, and salvation. It stresses the ultimate division between wheat and chaff, the eternal outcomes for each, and calls believers to remain steadfast in Christ, confident of their future gathering into His kingdom.
