Context

Luke 2:41-52 records that twelve-year-old Jesus traveled with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. After the celebration, the family began the journey home, but Jesus remained in Jerusalem without their knowledge. Mary and Joseph, realizing He was missing, searched anxiously for three days until they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Their amazement at His understanding and wisdom set the stage for His memorable reply.

Meaning

When His parents expressed their concern, Jesus answered with the words recorded in this verse. His response reveals three key truths. First, it shows a clear recognition of His divine mission: even at a young age He understood that His foremost obligation was to fulfill His Father’s will. Second, He affirms a unique relationship with God the Father, calling Him “my Father” and indicating the intimate bond that defines His identity.
