In Luke 2:41‑52 we read that twelve‑year‑old Jesus traveled with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. After the celebration, the family began the journey home, but Jesus remained in Jerusalem without their knowledge. Mary and Joseph, realizing He was missing, searched anxiously for three days until they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Their amazement at His understanding and wisdom set the stage for His memorable reply.

When His parents expressed their concern, Jesus answered with the words recorded in the verse above. His response reveals three key truths. First, it shows a clear recognition of His divine mission: even at a young age He understood that His foremost obligation was to fulfill His Father’s will. Second, He affirms a unique relationship with God the Father, calling Him “my Father” and indicating the intimate bond that defines His identity. Third, He emphasizes the priority of God’s work, declaring that He must be about His Father’s business, a statement that foreshadows the ministry He would later undertake to bring salvation to humanity.

The passage offers practical lessons for believers today. It calls us to become aware of our own divine calling, seeking to discern the purpose God has for each of our lives and submitting willingly to His will. It invites us into a deeper relationship with God, encouraging us to view Him as a loving Father and to rely on His guidance. Finally, it challenges us to prioritize God’s work above all else, dedicating our time, talents, and resources to advancing His kingdom and fulfilling the mission He has entrusted to us.
