Luke 5:3
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
Luke 5:3 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the larger narrative in which Jesus calls Simon Peter and other fishermen to become His disciples (Luke 5:1-11). A large crowd pressed in on Him by the Sea of Galilee, so He entered one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to push out a little from the land. The boat became a natural platform, allowing His voice to carry to the people on the shore. This scene sets the stage for the miraculous catch of fish and the call to follow Him.
Meaning
Jesus took the initiative to enter Simon’s boat, showing His willingness to use ordinary resources for His divine purpose. The boat, a common fishing vessel, became the place from which He taught the multitude. Jesus’ request to thrust out a little from the land was practical, creating space from the pressing crowd and improving the acoustics for His teaching. His sitting down to teach was the customary posture for Jewish teachers of that era, underscoring the formal and authoritative nature of His instruction.
Biblical connections
This event immediately precedes the miraculous catch of fish and Jesus’ call to Simon to become a fisher of men (Luke 5:4-10). The boat, belonging to Simon, symbolizes the vessel through which Jesus would carry His message, and it can be seen as a picture of the Church, the means by which the Gospel is conveyed to the world. Jesus’ use of the boat also demonstrates His approachability and His readiness to meet people where they are.
Application
Jesus’ example encourages believers to offer their own resources—whether time, talents, or possessions—for His service. Just as Simon lent his boat, we can place what we have at Jesus’ disposal, trusting that He can use it for His purposes. The passage also reminds us of the importance of prayer, as Jesus prayed before asking the boat to be moved, showing that prayer should be an essential part of our service to God.
Reflection
The authority of Jesus’ teaching drew the crowd to listen, reminding us of the transformative power of God’s Word when shared with sincerity and authority. This verse challenges us to consider how we can creatively and faithfully communicate the Gospel, using whatever settings and resources are available, and to trust that Jesus can use our ordinary circumstances for extraordinary purposes.
