Luke 5:3

Listen to this article

And he entred into one of the ships, which was Simons, and prayed him, that he would thrust out a little from the land: and he sate downe, and taught the people out of the ship. Luke 5:3 (KJV)

Context: This verse occurs in the narrative where Jesus calls Simon Peter and other fishermen to become His disciples. While teaching a large crowd by the Sea of Galilee, the pressing multitude caused Jesus to ask Simon to move his boat a short distance from the shore so that He could continue teaching from there. The scene sets the stage for the calling of the first disciples and illustrates Jesus’ strategic use of ordinary circumstances for divine purpose.

Symbolism of the Boat: The boat, belonging to Simon Peter, serves as a powerful symbol. It represents the vessel through which Jesus would carry His message to the people. Spiritually, the boat can be seen as a picture of the Church, a means by which the Gospel is conveyed to the world.

Jesus’ Approachability: Notice that Jesus takes the initiative to enter Simon’s boat. This demonstrates His willingness to use whatever resources are available to fulfill His mission. By entering the boat and teaching from it, He shows His accessibility and His readiness to meet people where they are.

The Importance of Prayer: Before asking the boat to be moved, Jesus prays that it would be thrust out a little from the land. This act underscores the central role of prayer in Jesus’ ministry and reminds believers that prayer should be an essential component of our own service to God, seeking His guidance, strength, and anointing.

Teaching from Unconventional Places: Jesus sits down in the boat and teaches the people from there. The unconventional setting allows His voice to carry over the water, reaching a larger audience and facilitating effective communication. It demonstrates His creative approach to reaching people and His ability to use various settings to convey His message.

The Power of God’s Word: The verse highlights the authority of Jesus’ teaching. The crowd gathers around the boat to listen, indicating the compelling nature of His words. This reminds us of the transformative impact of God’s Word when it is shared with sincerity and authority, capable of drawing hearts toward the Kingdom.
