Luke 5:2
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
Luke 5:2 (KJV)
Context
Luke 5:2 sits within the larger account of Jesus calling His first disciples (Luke 5:1-11). The event takes place early in Jesus’ ministry as He teaches by the Lake of Gennesaret, also known as the Sea of Galilee. The two ships belong to the fishermen who have just returned from a night of work and are now on shore washing their nets.
Meaning
The verse describes two ships standing by the lake, with the fishermen gone out of them and washing their nets. This detail shows that their fishing expedition was complete and they were preparing their equipment for the next outing. Washing the nets was necessary to remove debris and tangles that could hinder their effectiveness in catching fish. The fishermen’s presence on shore, cleaning their nets, highlights that their work was done—making Jesus’ later command to launch out into the deep and let down the nets a surprising and faith-demanding instruction.
Biblical connections
The empty boats and the fishermen cleaning their nets serve as a backdrop for the miraculous catch that follows. The boats represent the vessels Jesus would use to accomplish His purposes, and the fishermen symbolize those who would become His disciples and partners in His ministry. This moment of transition and readiness prepares for Jesus to use one of the boats as a teaching platform and then to call Simon Peter, James, and John to follow Him.
Application
The fishermen were obedient to Jesus’ call and ready to respond, even though they did not fully understand what He had in store. Their diligence in washing and preparing their nets models faithful preparation. The empty boats symbolize our lives, which Jesus desires to fill with His presence and use for His purposes. When Jesus calls, He often asks us to trust Him beyond our own plans and to follow in obedience.
Reflection
Consider the areas where you have finished your own work and are cleaning your nets. Jesus may be about to redirect your efforts in a surprising way. Trust Him with the outcome, and remain ready to respond when He calls.
