Luke 11:23
“He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth”
Context:In Luke 11, Jesus was casting out a demon from a man who was mute. After the demon was cast out, the man spoke, and the people marveled. However, some of the religious leaders accused Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the ruler of demons. Jesus responded to their accusations and explained the fallacy of their argument. It is within this context that He spoke the words recorded in Luke 11:23.
Meaning and Application:
- The Importance of Taking a Stand:Jesus emphasised the significance of taking a definitive stand for or against Him. There is no neutral ground when it comes to our relationship with Jesus. Either we are with Him or against Him. This statement calls for a decision and commitment to follow Him wholeheartedly. It implies that there are spiritual forces at work in the world, and we must align ourselves with the kingdom of God.
- Unity and Division:Jesus highlighted the division that arises when people are not united in their commitment to Him. He used the metaphor of gathering and scattering to illustrate this point. Those who are not actively working with Him, gathering people into His kingdom, are, in effect, scattering or dispersing them. The unity of purpose and alignment with Jesus is essential for the advancement of His kingdom.
- Discerning Loyalties:Jesus’ statement challenges us to examine our allegiances and loyalties. It forces us to reflect on whether we are truly following Him or pursuing our own interests and desires. We need to evaluate our actions, attitudes, and priorities to ensure that they align with His teachings. It is a call to examine our hearts and make a deliberate choice to stand with Jesus and live in obedience to His Word.
- Engaging in Kingdom Work:Jesus invites His followers to participate in the work of gathering people into His kingdom. This involves sharing the message of the Gospel, demonstrating His love through acts of kindness and service, and living as a witness for Him. By actively engaging in gathering, we contribute to the growth and expansion of God’s kingdom on earth.
- Spiritual Warfare:The statement of Jesus also implies the reality of spiritual warfare. There is a spiritual battle between the forces of darkness and the kingdom of God. Those who are not aligned with Jesus are inadvertently working against Him. As believers, we need to be aware of this spiritual conflict and equip ourselves with the armour of God to withstand and overcome the enemy’s schemes.
Conclusion:
Luke 11:23 is a powerful reminder of the importance of choosing a side and taking a stand for or against Jesus. It calls us to evaluate our allegiances and loyalties, ensuring that we align ourselves with His teachings and actively participate in the work of His kingdom. As followers of Christ, we are called to gather people into His fold and contribute to the unity and advancement of His kingdom. May we be mindful of the spiritual battle and remain steadfast in our commitment to Jesus, knowing that those who are not with Him are ultimately working against Him.
