Luke 11:21
When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
Luke 11:21 (KJV)
Context
Jesus speaks these words in response to the accusation that He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons (Luke 11:14-15). He uses the picture of a strong man guarding his palace to describe the present condition of those under Satan’s power.
Meaning
The strong man represents Satan or demonic forces, well-prepared and protected. His palace is the domain or influence he possesses, and his goods are the people or possessions under his control. The peace mentioned is not true peace but the security and undisturbed control the enemy enjoys while he remains unchallenged.
This verse sets the stage for the following verse, where a stronger man overcomes the armed strong man, takes away his armor, and divides his spoils (Luke 11:22). Jesus is the stronger one who defeats Satan and liberates those held captive.
Application
Recognising the enemy: This verse reminds us of the reality of spiritual forces that oppose God’s kingdom and seek to keep people captive. We must be aware of the enemy’s tactics and not be ignorant of his schemes.
The power of Christ: Jesus is the stronger one who can overcome the strong man and plunder his goods. Through His victory, He liberates people from Satan’s influence.
Prayer and spiritual warfare: This passage highlights the importance of prayer in the spiritual battle. Through persistent and fervent prayer, we align ourselves with God’s power and authority to overcome the enemy and bring freedom to those under his influence.
Standing firm in faith: Believers are called to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. With Christ on our side, we can resist the devil and his temptations, knowing that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Reflection
Luke 11:21 reminds us of the reality of spiritual warfare and the existence of an enemy who seeks to keep people in bondage. Yet through the power of Christ and persistent prayer, we can overcome the strong man and experience freedom in Christ. It encourages us to be vigilant, prayerful, and firm in our faith as we engage in the ongoing battle against the forces of darkness.
