Luke 11:23

He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

Luke 11:23 (KJV)

In Luke 11, Jesus had just cast a demon out of a man who was mute, and the crowd marveled when the man spoke. But some of the religious leaders accused Jesus of casting out demons by Beelzebub, the ruler of demons. Jesus answered their charge by showing how a divided kingdom cannot stand, and then He spoke the words of Luke 11:23. The verse is His direct response to their accusation, making clear that there is no middle ground between loyalty to Him and opposition to Him.

Jesus’ first statement, “He that is not with me is against me,” is not about physical proximity but about allegiance. It declares that neutrality toward Christ is impossible; every person either stands with Him or against Him. The second clause, “he that gathereth not with me scattereth,” uses the image of gathering a harvest or a flock. Christ’s mission is to gather people into the kingdom of God. Those who do not actively gather with Him are, by their inaction, scattering—working against the very purpose He came to accomplish.

The parallel passage in Matthew 12:30 records the same saying in the same context of the Beelzebub accusation. A related saying appears in Luke 9:50, where Jesus told His disciples, “he that is not against us is for us.” That statement was spoken about a man who was casting out demons in Jesus’ name, and it addresses a different situation. The two sayings are not contradictory: the man in Luke 9 was acting in Christ’s name, while the religious leaders in Luke 11 were actively opposing Him. Together, they show that the decisive issue is whether one is truly working for Christ or against Him.

  • The importance of taking a stand: Jesus calls for a definitive decision. There is no neutral ground in our relationship with Him. This statement demands wholehearted commitment and warns that spiritual forces are at work in the world, so we must align ourselves with the kingdom of God.

  • Unity and division: Jesus uses the metaphor of gathering and scattering to show that those who are not actively working with Him are, in effect, dispersing people from His kingdom. Unity of purpose with Jesus is essential for the advancement of His kingdom.

  • Discerning loyalties: This verse challenges us to examine our allegiances. Are we truly following Jesus, or are we pursuing our own interests? We must evaluate our actions, attitudes, and priorities to ensure they align with His teachings, and make a deliberate choice to stand with Him in obedience to His Word.

  • Engaging in kingdom work: Jesus invites His followers to participate in gathering people into His kingdom. This involves sharing the Gospel, demonstrating His love through acts of kindness and service, and living as a witness for Him. By actively gathering, we contribute to the growth of God’s kingdom on earth.

  • Spiritual warfare: The verse implies the reality of spiritual warfare. There is a battle between the forces of darkness and the kingdom of God. Those who are not aligned with Jesus are inadvertently working against Him. As believers, we must be aware of this conflict and equip ourselves with the armor of God to withstand the enemy’s schemes.

Luke 11:23 is a powerful reminder that we must choose a side. It calls us to evaluate our loyalties, align ourselves with Jesus, and actively participate in His kingdom work. As followers of Christ, we are called to gather people into His fold and contribute to the unity and advancement of His kingdom. May we remain steadfast in our commitment to Jesus, knowing that those who are not with Him are ultimately working against Him.
