Luke 9:50

Posted on 18 May at 14:41
Listen to this article

“Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is responding to one of His disciples who reported seeing someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name but was not following them as part of their immediate group. The disciple expressed concern and wanted to stop the person from doing this. Jesus then responds with the statement found in Luke 9:50.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “Forbid him not”: Jesus is instructing His disciples not to prevent or hinder the person who was casting out demons in Jesus’ name. This shows Jesus’ openness to those who genuinely demonstrate faith and are engaged in the work of God’s kingdom.
  • “He that is not against us is for us”: This phrase emphasizes the principle that those who are not explicitly opposing Jesus and His disciples are, in fact, supporting them. Jesus affirms that the person casting out demons in His name is on their side and working towards the same goal, even though they are not part of the immediate circle of disciples.
  • Application and Lessons:
  • Unity in the Body of Christ:Jesus’ statement highlights the importance of unity among believers. While there may be different expressions and methods of serving God, as long as they are aligned with the truth of the Gospel, they should be acknowledged and supported. Instead of focusing on differences or minor disagreements, followers of Christ should recognize the common goal of advancing the kingdom of God.
  • Recognising God’s Work:Jesus teaches His disciples not to be quick to dismiss or discourage others who are doing good works in His name. The emphasis is on the person’s faith and the alignment of their actions with the principles and power of Jesus Christ.
  • Avoiding a Narrow-Minded Attitude:This verse challenges us to avoid exclusivity or a narrow-minded perspective within the Body of Christ. We should be open to different ways God uses individuals to advance His kingdom and be willing to embrace and encourage their efforts.
  • Related Scriptures:
  • Mark 9:38-40: In this parallel passage, Jesus again teaches His disciples not to hinder those who perform miracles in His name, emphasising the same principle as Luke 9:50.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: This passage discusses the unity of believers as the body of Christ, highlighting the importance of each member and the diversity of spiritual gifts.

In conclusion, Luke 9:50 teaches us to embrace unity among believers, recognise and support the work of God wherever it may be found, and avoid a narrow-minded attitude. By focusing on the common goal of advancing the kingdom of God, we can foster a spirit of unity and cooperation within the Body of Christ.
