Mark 9:40

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“For he that is not against us is on our part.”

Context: To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to examine the context in which it is found. In Mark 9, Jesus is teaching His disciples about various aspects of discipleship, including humility, service, and the dangers of causing others to stumble in their faith.

In the preceding verses (Mark 9:38-39), John, one of the disciples, reported to Jesus that they had seen someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name, but because the person was not following them, they tried to stop him. In response to John’s report, Jesus gave the instruction found in Mark 9:40.

This verse carries a significant message about inclusivity and unity among believers. Jesus emphasizes that those who perform good works in His name, even if they are not part of the immediate group of disciples, should not be hindered or discouraged. The person who is not actively opposing Jesus and His teachings is, in fact, aligned with Him.

In the broader context of the Gospel of Mark, this verse conveys a vital principle that followers of Christ should not be quick to exclude or dismiss others who may be doing good works or sharing the message of Jesus, even if they are not part of their particular group or denomination. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the work of the Holy Spirit in and through others, regardless of any personal preferences or differences.

The verse also serves as a reminder that unity among believers is crucial. Instead of creating divisions or being exclusive, we should embrace and encourage those who are genuinely seeking to advance God’s kingdom. While it is essential to discern and evaluate teachings and actions against the biblical truth, this verse reminds us to be open-minded and charitable towards other believers who may differ from us in secondary matters.
