Mark 9:39

Listen to this article

“But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.”

Mark 9:39 (KJV) says, “But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Mark 9:38-41 where the disciples reported to Jesus that they had seen someone casting out demons in His name, but they tried to stop him because he was not one of their group. Jesus responds to their concern with the words recorded in Mark 9:39.

This verse teaches us several important lessons:

Acceptance of different approaches:Jesus instructs His disciples not to forbid the man from performing miracles in His name. This shows us that even if someone is not part of our immediate group or community, if they are doing good works in the name of Jesus, they should be acknowledged and supported. We are called to recognize the work of God happening through others, regardless of their affiliation or background.

Genuine faith leads to reverence:Jesus states that no one who performs miracles in His name can easily speak evil of Him. This implies that those who truly believe in Jesus and have the power to perform miracles through His name will also have reverence and respect for Him. It emphasizes the connection between faith and actions, highlighting that true followers of Christ will honor and glorify Him in both word and deed.

The authority of Jesus’ name:By performing miracles in Jesus’ name, this person acknowledged the authority and power of Jesus. The authority of Jesus’ name is not limited to a select group of individuals, but it extends to anyone who believes in Him and calls upon His name in faith. This verse reminds us that the power and authority of Jesus’ name are available to all who believe and invoke it in genuine faith.

In summary, Mark 9:39 teaches us about the importance of accepting the works done in Jesus’ name by others, the connection between faith and reverence, and the authority of Jesus’ name. It encourages us to support and recognize the good works done in Jesus’ name, regardless of the specific affiliation of those who perform them, and reminds us of the power and significance of genuine faith in Christ.
