Mark 9:38

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.”

Context:In the preceding verses (Mark 9:30-37), Jesus had been teaching His disciples about His impending death and resurrection. However, the disciples did not fully understand His message and were instead focused on their own ambitions and desire for positions of power in the kingdom of God.

John’s Concern:In verse 38, John brings to Jesus’ attention an incident where they had seen someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name. John explains that they had forbidden this person from doing so because he was not part of their group of disciples. John’s concern seems to stem from the fact that this person was not following the disciples in their specific ministry.

Jesus’ Response:Jesus responds to John’s concern in the following verses (Mark 9:39-41) with a corrective perspective. He says, “Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part” (Mark 9:39-40, KJV).

Inclusive Acceptance:Jesus teaches the disciples to have a broader perspective. He emphasizes that anyone who performs miracles in His name cannot speak evil of Him. He further explains that those who are not directly against them are actually on their side. Jesus encourages His disciples to be inclusive and not hinder the work of others who acknowledge His authority and seek to do good.

Humility and Unity:This passage highlights the importance of humility and unity within the body of Christ. Jesus instructs His disciples not to be concerned with their own positions of power or to restrict others from doing good works in His name. He wants His followers to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in and through other believers, regardless of their organizational affiliations.
