Luke 11:22

But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

Context

Jesus spoke these words after the Pharisees accused Him of casting out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons (Luke 11:14-15). In the preceding verse, He described a strong man fully armed who guards his palace, and his goods are safe. Now He describes what happens when a stronger one arrives.

Meaning

The “strong man” represents the devil, who holds people captive through sin and deception. The “stronger than he” is Jesus Christ, who is far more powerful than the devil. The Greek word for “stronger” (ischyroteros) emphasizes His superior strength. Jesus comes upon the devil, overcomes him, and takes away all his armour—the strategies, temptations, and lies in which the devil trusts. Then Jesus divides the spoils, reclaiming what rightfully belongs to God’s kingdom: the souls of those who were held captive.

Biblical connections

This verse connects to Jesus’ earlier statement that the kingdom of God has come upon His hearers (Luke 11:20). Christ’s victory over the devil is decisive and complete, demonstrating that God’s power has broken Satan’s hold.

Application

Believers can take courage from this verse. No matter how strong the enemy appears, Christ has already won the victory through His death and resurrection.
