Luke 11:34

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light: but when thine eye is euill, thy body also is full of darkenesse. Luke 11:34 (KJV)

thine eye

is evil, thy body also

is full of darkness. Luke 11:34 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage in which Jesus is teaching His disciples about spiritual focus. In this particular verse, Jesus uses metaphorical language to convey a profound spiritual truth. Jesus begins by saying, “The light of the body is the eye.” The eye serves as a metaphor for the inner focus and perception of a person. Just as the physical eye allows light to enter the body and enables vision, the inner eye or focus determines the spiritual state of a person.

Jesus continues, saying, “therefore when thine eye is single.” The term “single” means undivided or focused, emphasizing the importance of having a clear and undivided spiritual vision. A single eye represents a heart and mind directed solely towards God and His kingdom. When a person’s eye is single, Jesus states, “thy whole body also is full of light.” This means that when our focus is solely on God and His ways, our entire being is filled with spiritual light. It implies that our thoughts, actions, and attitudes are aligned with God’s truth, righteousness, and love. A person with a single eye is spiritually enlightened and reflects God’s glory.

On the other hand, Jesus warns about the consequences of having an evil eye, saying, “but when thine eye is evil.” In this context, an evil eye refers to a heart and mind that is filled with darkness and corrupted by sinful desires, worldly distractions, and selfish motives. When someone has an evil eye, Jesus says, “thy body also is full of darkness.” This indicates that if our focus is on worldly pursuits, sin, and self‑centeredness, our entire being will be filled with spiritual darkness. Our thoughts, actions, and attitudes will be marked by sin, and we will be distant from God’s truth and righteousness.
