Luke 15:5

And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

Luke 15:5 (KJV)

Luke 15 contains a series of parables taught by Jesus in response to the Pharisees and scribes who grumbled about Him welcoming sinners and eating with them (Luke 15:1-2). The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son illustrate God’s relentless love and His desire to seek and save the lost.

In this parable, a shepherd leaves the ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness to search for the one that is lost until he finds it (Luke 15:4). The verse then describes what happens when he finds it: he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

The lost sheep represents a person who has strayed from God and His ways, separated from the fold of God’s people. The shepherd represents Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd. Jesus is compassionate and actively seeks those who are lost, demonstrating God’s love and grace.

The image of the shepherd carrying the sheep on his shoulders depicts Jesus’ redemptive work. It signifies how Jesus bears our burdens and carries us back to safety and restoration. The shepherd does not carry the sheep with weariness or complaint but with rejoicing, showing the personal care and effort involved in restoration.

The shepherd’s joy upon finding the lost sheep represents the rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents and returns to God (Luke 15:7). It portrays the joy that God and the angels experience when a lost soul is saved.

This verse connects to the following verse, where the shepherd calls his friends and neighbors to rejoice with him (Luke 15:6), and to Luke 15:7, where Jesus states there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. The act of laying the sheep on his shoulders can be seen as Christ taking the burden of our sin and carrying us to safety.

  • God’s Pursuit of the Lost: The parable highlights God’s relentless pursuit of those who have gone astray. No matter how lost we may feel or how far we have strayed, God actively seeks to bring us back into His loving embrace.

  • Individual Worth: The parable emphasizes the value God places on each individual. Just as the shepherd cared deeply for each sheep, God values and loves each person. No one is insignificant in God’s eyes.

  • God’s Joy in Salvation: The parable reveals God’s heart of joy when sinners repent and turn to Him. It demonstrates God’s desire for reconciliation and restoration, showcasing His abundant grace and mercy.

  • Our Response: As believers, we are called to have a heart like the Good Shepherd. We should actively reach out to those who are lost, sharing the love of Christ and helping to bring them back into the fold. We should rejoice when someone comes to faith in Christ and support them in their journey.

Luke 15:5 encourages us to recognize the depth of God’s love for us and to respond by seeking those who are lost, extending God’s grace and mercy to them. It reminds us that no matter how lost we may feel, God is always ready to welcome us back with open arms.
