Luke 18:16

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s look at the broader context. In Luke 18, Jesus is teaching His disciples through parables, including the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge (Luke 18:1-8) and the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14). In verse 15, people were bringing their infants to Jesus so that He could touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. It is in response to this that Jesus calls them and speaks the words mentioned in Luke 18:16.

Jesus’ Invitation:In this verse, Jesus invites the children to come to Him. The phrase “Suffer little children to come unto me” implies that Jesus desires the presence of children and wants them to be near Him. It shows His love, care, and concern for children.

The Kingdom of God:Jesus states that “of such is the kingdom of God.” This statement suggests that the childlike qualities are highly valued in the kingdom of God. Children possess qualities such as trust, humility, innocence, and dependence that serve as positive examples for adults. Jesus highlights the importance of childlike faith and the need for believers to have a childlike heart and attitude toward God.

Lessons for Believers:a. Humility: Children are humble and dependent on others for their needs. Similarly, believers are called to approach God with humility, recognizing their dependence on Him and acknowledging His sovereignty.

b. Trust: Children have a natural trust in their parents. Likewise, believers are encouraged to trust God completely, knowing that He is faithful and will take care of them.

c. Innocence: Children are often free from cynicism, skepticism, and worldly wisdom. Believers are reminded to maintain purity of heart, avoiding the corruption of worldly influences.

d. Receiving God’s Kingdom: By welcoming and accepting children, Jesus teaches us about receiving the Kingdom of God. We must have a childlike faith and a willingness to receive God’s love, grace, and salvation without hesitation or skepticism.

Application:As we study this verse, we should examine our own attitudes toward children and our approach to God. We should strive to cultivate childlike qualities in our relationship with God, such as trust, humility, innocence, and a willingness to receive His kingdom. Furthermore, we should value and care for children, considering them important members of our faith community and demonstrating Christ’s love to them.
