Luke 22:69

Listen to this article

“Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

Context:Luke 22:69 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ trial before the Jewish religious authorities and His subsequent crucifixion. In this verse, Jesus affirms His identity as the Son of Man and speaks of His future exalted position at the right hand of God’s power.

The Son of Man:Jesus often referred to Himself as the Son of Man, emphasizing His humanity while also alluding to His divine nature. The title “Son of Man” comes from Daniel 7:13-14, where the prophet Daniel sees a vision of one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven and receiving authority, dominion, and an everlasting kingdom.

Exalted position:Jesus speaks of sitting on the right hand of the power of God. This phrase indicates a position of honour, authority, and equality with God. Sitting at the right hand signifies sharing in God’s divine authority and power. It is a position of utmost significance and glory.

Fulfillment of prophecies:Jesus’ words in Luke 22:69 align with various Old Testament prophecies. For example, Psalm 110:1 states, “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” This psalm is messianic in nature, and Jesus often referred to it to validate His identity as the Messiah.

Theology of Jesus’ exaltation:Jesus’ statement about sitting at the right hand of God has theological implications. It points to His victorious resurrection, ascension, and subsequent reign. It signifies His authority over all things and His divine status. Jesus’ exaltation at the right hand of God also highlights His role as the mediator between God and humanity, interceding on our behalf.
