Listen to this article

“For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.”

Context:Luke 22:37 is part of the narrative of the Last Supper and the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus is addressing His disciples, predicting His impending arrest, suffering, and death. In this verse, Jesus refers to a prophecy that must be fulfilled concerning Himself.

Old Testament Prophecy:The first part of the verse, “For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me,” indicates that Jesus is pointing to an Old Testament prophecy that is about to be fulfilled in His life. The prophecy He refers to is found in Isaiah 53:12, which says, “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

“He was reckoned among the transgressors”:The second part of Luke 22:37 states, “And he was reckoned among the transgressors.” This phrase emphasizes the manner in which Jesus would be treated during His crucifixion. Jesus, who was without sin, would be numbered among criminals, highlighting the extent of His identification with humanity and His willingness to suffer on behalf of sinners.

The completion of Christ’s mission:The verse concludes with the statement, “For the things concerning me have an end.” This signifies that Jesus’ earthly mission, including His suffering, death, and resurrection, would soon reach its fulfillment. It reminds us that Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth was to fulfill God’s plan of redemption and to provide salvation for humanity through His sacrificial death.

Application:

  • Luke 22:37 emphasizes Jesus’ willingness to bear our sins and suffer on our behalf. It highlights the extent of His identification with transgressors, demonstrating His love and compassion for humanity. As believers, we can find comfort and assurance in the fact that Jesus willingly took our place, bearing the penalty of our sins, and providing us with the opportunity to be reconciled with God. This verse also reminds us of the importance of Jesus’ mission and the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation.

In summary, Luke 22:37 is a powerful verse that points to an Old Testament prophecy concerning Jesus’ crucifixion and His identification with transgressors. It reminds us of the completion of Jesus’ mission and the purpose of His coming to earth. This verse encourages us to reflect on the incredible love and sacrifice of Jesus and the salvation He offers to all who believe in Him.
