Luke 24:33

Posted on 18 May at 14:38

“And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them.”

Context:The passage comes from the Gospel of Luke, specifically from the account of Jesus’ resurrection. This verse follows the story of two disciples who were on their way to a village called Emmaus when they encountered the risen Jesus. They initially did not recognize Him but later realised who He was and returned to Jerusalem to share the news with the eleven disciples.

Importance of the Resurrection:The resurrection of Jesus is one of the central events in Christianity. It confirms His divinity and victory over sin and death. The disciples’ encounter with the risen Jesus transformed their understanding and solidified their faith in Him as the Messiah.

Prompt obedience:The disciples immediately responded to the realisation that they had encountered the risen Lord. Luke records that “they rose up the same hour.” This indicates their sense of urgency and obedience to Jesus’ command to go and share the good news. Their prompt action highlights the importance of responding swiftly to God’s call in our lives.

Fellowship and community:The disciples returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven gathered together. This gathering of the disciples signifies the importance of community and fellowship among believers. The early disciples found strength and support in coming together, sharing their experiences, and supporting one another. It emphasises the value of being connected to a community of believers for encouragement, teaching, and accountability.

Unity in purpose:The eleven disciples had experienced various emotions and doubts following Jesus’ crucifixion, but the news of His resurrection brought them together. Despite their individual struggles, they united around the truth of Jesus’ victory over death. This unity in purpose serves as a reminder that despite our differences and struggles, we are called to stand together in proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ.

Application:The passage encourages us to respond promptly and obediently to God’s call, just as the disciples did. When we encounter the risen Lord in our lives, we should be eager to share the good news and testify to His transformative power. Additionally, it reminds us of the significance of gathering with other believers for support, encouragement, and united purpose.

  • In conclusion:Luke 24:33 captures the disciples’ prompt obedience and their return to Jerusalem to share the news of Jesus’ resurrection. It highlights the importance of the resurrection, fellowship, unity, and prompt obedience in the life of a believer.
