Luke 24:31

Posted on 18 May at 14:38
Listen to this article

“And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.”

Context:The passage in Luke 24:13-35 recounts an encounter between two disciples and Jesus on the day of His resurrection. The disciples were traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion and the reports of His resurrection. Jesus appeared to them but initially concealed His identity from them.

Recognition:In Luke 24:31, we read that as Jesus joined the disciples at their meal, “their eyes were opened.” This phrase signifies a supernatural act by which they suddenly recognized Jesus as the one who had been speaking to them. Prior to this moment, they had been prevented from recognizing Him.

Knowledge:Following the opening of their eyes, the disciples “knew him.” This implies not just a visual recognition but a deeper understanding of who Jesus truly was. They recognized Him as the resurrected Christ, the fulfilment of prophecies, and the Saviour promised in the Scriptures.

Vanishing:The verse concludes by stating that Jesus “vanished out of their sight.” This sudden disappearance of Jesus may seem perplexing, but it emphasises the miraculous nature of His resurrection body. It also highlights the purpose of Jesus’ appearance to the disciples: to reveal Himself, confirm His resurrection, and strengthen their faith.

Key Themes:

  • Spiritual blindness:Before their eyes were opened, the disciples were spiritually blind to Jesus’ presence. This can serve as a reminder that our spiritual perception is often limited, and we may fail to recognise God’s presence or His work in our lives.
  • Revelation and recognition:The opening of the disciples’ eyes illustrates the work of God in revealing Himself to His people. It also highlights the importance of spiritual discernment and understanding to recognise Jesus when He reveals Himself to us today.
  • Jesus as the risen Saviour:The disciples’ recognition of Jesus affirmed His resurrection, validating His claims and fulfilling the prophecies. This verse emphasises the central message of the Gospel: Jesus’ victory over sin and death through His resurrection.
  • Transience of Jesus’ physical presence:Jesus vanishing from their sight reminds us that His physical presence on earth was temporary. After accomplishing His mission, Jesus ascended into heaven. This encourages believers to rely on the Holy Spirit’s presence within them and to trust in the promises of Jesus even though they cannot physically see Him.

Overall, Luke 24:31 is a significant verse that encapsulates the disciples’ recognition of the risen Christ and the transformative power of encountering Jesus. It encourages us to seek spiritual discernment, recognise Jesus’ presence in our lives, and trust in His promises, even when we cannot physically see Him.
