Luke 24:27
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
This verse is part of the account of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, who encountered Jesus after His resurrection. In this verse, Jesus is speaking to the disciples and explaining to them the significance of His life, death, and resurrection in light of the Scriptures.
Here are a few key points to consider in this verse:
- Understanding the Old Testament:Jesus begins by stating that He started His teaching from “Moses and all the prophets.” This reference encompasses the entire Old Testament. Jesus is emphasizing the importance of the Hebrew Scriptures and indicating that they contain prophetic and Messianic references that point to Him.
- The Messiah in Scripture:Jesus expounded or explained to the disciples “in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” This statement indicates that the entirety of the Old Testament, including the Law (Moses) and the Prophets, contained prophecies, types, and shadows that were fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus shows how the Old Testament pointed to His coming, His purpose, and His redemptive work.
- Fulfillment of Prophecies:Jesus reveals to the disciples how He fulfills the messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament. Throughout the Scriptures, various prophecies spoke of the promised Messiah who would come to redeem God’s people. Jesus likely explained how He fulfilled these prophecies through His birth, life, death, and resurrection.
- The Unity of Scripture:Jesus’ words also emphasize the unity and coherence of the entire Scripture. He connects the Old Testament with His life and ministry, demonstrating that the Scriptures have a central theme and purpose: to point to Him as the fulfillment of God’s plan for salvation.
This verse highlights the importance of recognizing Jesus as the central figure of the Scriptures. Through His teaching, Jesus brings clarity and understanding to the disciples, revealing the fulfillment of prophecies and the significance of His redemptive work.
By studying this verse, we can learn the significance of Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and gain a deeper appreciation for the unity of Scripture in pointing to Him as the Savior. It encourages us to study the Scriptures with the understanding that they testify of Jesus and to seek Him in all parts of God’s Word.
