John 1:40

One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

John 1:40 (KJV)

John 1:40 appears in the opening chapter of the Gospel of John, a book that focuses on the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the preceding verses, John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of his disciples begin to follow Jesus. This verse identifies one of those two as Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

The verse emphasizes that Andrew heard John the Baptist speak and then followed Jesus. His hearing was not passive; it led to action. Andrew’s immediate response shows his readiness to accept John’s testimony and his recognition that Jesus was worth following. This action marks the beginning of Andrew’s own discipleship journey.

Andrew’s identification as Simon Peter’s brother is significant for the narrative that follows. In John 1:41-42, Andrew finds his brother Simon and tells him, “We have found the Messiah,” and brings him to Jesus. This highlights Andrew’s role in introducing others to Jesus. Throughout the Gospels, Andrew is often mentioned in connection with bringing people to Christ, and he later becomes one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus.

John 1:40 reminds us of a few important lessons:

  • Immediate Response: Andrew didn’t hesitate when he heard about Jesus; he immediately followed Him. This challenges us to respond promptly when we hear the call of Jesus in our own lives.

  • Discipleship: Andrew’s commitment to follow Jesus sets an example for us to prioritise our relationship with Him above all else. It reminds us that being a disciple of Jesus involves a lifelong journey of learning, growing, and sharing our faith with others.

  • Impact on Others: Andrew’s role in bringing others to Jesus highlights the importance of our influence on those around us. By sharing the love of Christ and introducing others to Him, we can make a significant impact on their lives.

Andrew’s example teaches us the value of prompt obedience, discipleship, and the impact we can have on others when we share our faith. May we, like Andrew, be willing to follow Jesus and bring others to Him.
