John 1:39

Listen to this article

He saith vnto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth houre. John 1:39 (KJV)

He saith unto them,

Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. John 1:39 (KJV)

Context: Prior to this verse, John the Baptist had identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. Two of John’s disciples, including Andrew and another follower, heard this and started following Jesus.

Invitation: Jesus saith unto them, “Come and see.” In response to Andrew and the other disciple following him, Jesus invites them to come and see where he dwells. This invitation goes beyond a physical location; it is an invitation to experience a personal relationship with Jesus.

Response: They came and saw where he dwelt. Andrew and the other disciple accepted Jesus’ invitation and spent time with him. They wanted to know more about him and understand his teachings.

Abode with him: Andrew and the other disciple stayed with Jesus for the rest of the day. This demonstrates their eagerness to learn from him and their desire to deepen their relationship with him.

The tenth hour: The verse mentions that it was about the tenth hour. In the Jewish reckoning of time, the tenth hour would correspond to around 4 p.m. This detail provides a specific time frame for this encounter.

The significance of this verse lies in the disciples’ response to Jesus’ invitation. They willingly accepted his invitation to come and see, and their decision to spend time with him led to a transformative experience. This encounter marked the beginning of their journey as disciples of Jesus, which would ultimately have a profound impact on their lives and the lives of countless others.
