John 1:40

Listen to this article

“One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, let’s first look at the context. The book of John is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament, and it focuses on the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. John 1:35-39 describes how John the Baptist pointed out Jesus to his disciples, and two of them decided to follow Jesus.

The Disciple Andrew:In John 1:40, we are introduced to Andrew, who was one of the two disciples of John the Baptist mentioned in the previous verses. Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter, who later became one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus. Andrew’s encounter with Jesus marked the beginning of his own discipleship journey.

Andrew’s Response:The key point in this verse is Andrew’s response to hearing John the Baptist speak about Jesus. He followed Jesus. This action shows Andrew’s immediate obedience and his recognition that Jesus was someone worth following. Andrew’s response sets an example for us to respond to the call of Jesus with a willing heart and a desire to know Him more.

Andrew’s Role:Andrew’s role as one of the earliest disciples of Jesus is significant. In the Gospels, Andrew is often mentioned in connection with bringing people to Jesus. For example, in John 1:41-42, Andrew brought his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, who became a prominent figure in the early Christian church. Andrew’s willingness to introduce others to Jesus teaches us the importance of sharing our faith with others and leading them to Christ.

Lessons for Us:John 1:40 reminds us of a few important lessons:

  • Immediate Response:Andrew didn’t hesitate when he heard about Jesus; he immediately followed Him. This challenges us to respond promptly when we hear the call of Jesus in our own lives.
  • Discipleship:Andrew’s commitment to follow Jesus sets an example for us to prioritise our relationship with Him above all else. It reminds us that being a disciple of Jesus involves a lifelong journey of learning, growing, and sharing our faith with others.
  • Impact on Others:Andrew’s role in bringing others to Jesus highlights the importance of our influence on those around us. By sharing the love of Christ and introducing others to Him, we can make a significant impact on their lives.

In conclusion, John 1:40 introduces us to Andrew, who responded immediately to the call of Jesus and became one of His disciples. Andrew’s example teaches us the value of prompt obedience, discipleship, and the impact we can have on others when we share our faith. May we, like Andrew, be willing to follow Jesus and bring others to Him.
