John 2:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:38

“When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.”

Context: To understand the significance of John 2:22, let’s look at the context. This verse comes from the Gospel of John, specifically after Jesus performed His first public miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11). In this passage, Jesus had cleared the temple in Jerusalem of the merchants and moneychangers (John 2:13-17), and the Jews questioned Him about His authority to do so. Jesus responded with a statement about destroying the temple and raising it up in three days (John 2:19). John 2:22 refers to the disciples’ understanding and belief in Jesus’ words after His resurrection.

Jesus’ Prediction: In verse 19, Jesus was speaking metaphorically about His own body as the temple. He was foreshadowing His death and resurrection, saying that if His physical body was destroyed, He would raise it up again in three days. At the time, the disciples did not fully grasp the meaning of His words.

Disciples’ Understanding: John 2:22 reveals the disciples’ response after Jesus was resurrected. It states that His disciples remembered His words and then believed the scripture and Jesus’ words. It indicates that they now understood the meaning behind Jesus’ statement and recognized it as a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and teachings.

Believing the Scripture: The disciples’ belief in the scripture mentioned in John 2:22 refers to their understanding that Jesus’ resurrection was not an isolated event but part of God’s plan as foretold in the Old Testament. The resurrection of Jesus is a central theme in the Scriptures, and the disciples’ recognition of its fulfillment strengthened their faith in Jesus as the Messiah.

Application: John 2:22 teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it reminds us that Jesus’ words are trustworthy and often have a deeper meaning beyond their immediate context. It encourages us to seek a deeper understanding of God’s Word and reflect on its significance. Secondly, it emphasizes the importance of the resurrection of Jesus as a foundational truth of the Christian faith. The disciples’ belief in Jesus’ resurrection transformed their lives and empowered them to spread the gospel message. Lastly, John 2:22 reminds us of the role of Scripture in shaping our faith. The disciples’ belief in the scriptures strengthened their confidence in Jesus’ words and actions.

  • In summary, John 2:22 highlights the disciples’ recognition and belief in Jesus’ resurrection as they remembered His words and understood their fulfillment in Scripture. It teaches us to trust in Jesus’ words, seek a deeper understanding of Scripture, and embrace the transformative power of the resurrection in our lives.
