John 2:22
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
John 2:22 (KJV)
Context
John 2:22 concludes the account of Jesus clearing the temple in Jerusalem. After He drove out the merchants and money-changers, the Jewish leaders demanded a sign of His authority (John 2:13-18). Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). His hearers misunderstood, thinking He meant the physical temple, but John explains that Jesus spoke of His body (John 2:21). Verse 22 then records the disciples’ response after His resurrection.
Meaning
In John 2:22, the disciples “remembered” Jesus’ words after He rose from the dead. The Greek word for “remembered” implies more than simple recall; it suggests that the resurrection brought clarity and conviction. They had not understood His prediction at first, but the resurrection illuminated its true meaning. Their belief was twofold: they believed “the scripture” and “the word which Jesus had said.” The phrase “the scripture” likely refers to the Old Testament, which foretold the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection. The disciples’ faith was not immediate; it grew as they saw the fulfillment of Jesus’ words and the Scriptures together.
Biblical connections
This verse highlights the unity of Scripture and Jesus’ words as objects of faith. The disciples believed both the Old Testament prophecies and Jesus’ own prediction. The resurrection serves as the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of Jesus’ teachings and the Scriptures. As Jesus later explained to His disciples, “all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luke 24:44). The resurrection confirms Jesus’ authority and identity, showing that His words are reliable and that the Scriptures point to Him.
Application
John 2:22 teaches us that Jesus’ words are trustworthy, even when we do not fully understand them at the moment. The disciples did not grasp His meaning until after the resurrection, but they later remembered and believed. This encourages us to treasure Jesus’ words and the Scriptures, trusting that God will clarify them in His time. The resurrection is foundational to our faith; it transforms confusion into conviction and empowers us to live for Christ. We can confidently build our lives on Jesus’ promises, knowing that He is risen and His word stands forever.
In summary, John 2:22 shows the disciples’ growth from misunderstanding to faith as they remembered Jesus’ words and believed the Scriptures. It calls us to trust in Jesus’ words, seek deeper understanding of Scripture, and embrace the transformative power of the resurrection.
