John 5:23
Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to consider its context. In John 5, Jesus heals a man who had been an invalid for 38 years on the Sabbath day. This action caused controversy among the Jews, who accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath law. In response, Jesus spoke about His authority and relationship with the Father.
Equality of Honor:In this verse, Jesus declares that all people should honor the Son (referring to Himself) just as they honor the Father. Jesus equates the honor due to the Father with the honor due to Himself. This statement emphasizes the divine nature and equality between the Father and the Son.
Honoring the Son Honors the Father:Jesus states that those who do not honor the Son do not honor the Father who sent Him. This statement highlights the inseparable connection between the Father and the Son. Honoring or dishonoring one directly affects the other. Jesus is essentially saying that true honor for God is incomplete if it does not extend to honoring Him as the Son.
Implications of Honor:Honoring Jesus as the Son is not merely an outward expression but also a matter of the heart. It involves recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, the Savior of the world, and submitting to His lordship. Honoring Jesus involves acknowledging His divine authority, obeying His teachings, and placing faith in Him for salvation.
Jesus as the Mediator:The verse also reveals Jesus’ role as the Mediator between humanity and the Father. By emphasizing the connection between honoring the Son and honoring the Father, Jesus establishes Himself as the conduit through which people can approach and worship God. Jesus is the bridge that enables us to have a relationship with the Father.
Application:This verse calls believers to give Jesus the honor and reverence that is due to Him. It reminds us that our worship of God is incomplete if we neglect to honor Jesus as the Son. As Christians, we are called to honor Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions. This involves recognizing His divinity, following His teachings, and living in obedience to Him.
