Listen to this article

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

Context:John 5:24 is part of a larger conversation between Jesus and the Jews. In this passage, Jesus is explaining His authority as the Son of God and the basis of eternal life.

“Verily, verily”:The phrase “verily, verily” is used by Jesus to emphasize the importance and truthfulness of what He is about to say. It signifies that what follows is a solemn and significant statement.

Hearing and believing:Jesus states that those who hear His word and believe in the One who sent Him have everlasting life. This highlights the necessity of both hearing and believing in Jesus. Hearing refers to attentive listening, receiving, and understanding His teachings. Believing involves placing one’s trust and faith in Jesus as the Son of God and the Savior.

Life and condemnation:Jesus promises that those who hear His word and believe will not come into condemnation. This means that they will not face the judgment and eternal punishment for their sins. Instead, they have passed from spiritual death (separation from God) to spiritual life (eternal fellowship with God). Through faith in Jesus, believers receive the gift of eternal life.

Assurance of salvation:This verse provides assurance to believers that they have eternal life. It assures them that they are secure in their relationship with God and need not fear condemnation. This assurance is based on faith in Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross.

Implications:John 5:24 emphasizes the centrality of faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. It highlights the importance of hearing and believing His message, which leads to a transformed spiritual state and eternal life. This verse emphasizes the gracious gift of salvation and the security it brings to believers.

Application:As believers, we are called to hear and study the Word of God, understanding its teachings and truths. We are to place our faith and trust in Jesus, recognizing Him as the Son of God and the only way to eternal life. This verse encourages us to live in the assurance of our salvation and to share the good news of Jesus with others.

  • Remember to consider the broader context of the Gospel of John and the entirety of Scripture when studying and applying verses. The Bible is a cohesive narrative that reveals God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.
