John 5:25
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
In this profound declaration, Christ reveals His divine authority and life-giving power. He opens with the double affirmation, "Verily, verily," signalling a truth of absolute certainty and theological gravity. The statement introduces a vital reality regarding the kingdom of God: an hour that "is coming, and now is." This captures the essential nature of salvation. While a future, physical resurrection is assured for all humanity, a profound spiritual resurrection is actively occurring right now.
When Christ speaks of the "dead" in this present hour, He refers to those who are spiritually dead. Scripture describes the natural human condition as being dead in trespasses and sins, separated from the life of God. This spiritual resurrection takes place the moment an individual hears the truth of the Gospel and responds with faith. It is not achieved through human effort or moral reformation; it is a divine impartation granted entirely by grace.
The active agent in this awakening is the voice of the Son of God. Just as the spoken word of God brought the physical universe into existence, the voice of the Son speaks spiritual life into a lifeless soul. His voice possesses inherent, life-giving authority. This present reality of spiritual awakening serves as the foundation and absolute guarantee of the future, physical resurrection. The very same voice that currently awakens the spiritually dead will one day speak with sovereign authority to summon all the physically dead from their graves.
Those who hear and believe receive life immediately. They cross over from death to life in the present moment, gaining an eternal life that is not merely a future hope, but a secure, present possession. Because this transition is a completed spiritual reality, believers are entirely freed from the fear of future condemnation, resting securely in the power of the Son of God.
