Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

Context

John 5:28 comes from Jesus’ discourse with Jewish leaders after He healed an invalid at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath. In this passage, Jesus explains His relationship with the Father and His authority to give life and to judge. He has just spoken of a present spiritual resurrection (John 5:25), and now He moves to a future, universal resurrection.

Meaning

Jesus says, “Marvel not at this,” connecting the preceding teaching to an even greater wonder. The “hour” is a definite future time when all who are in the graves—both the righteous and the unrighteous—will hear His voice. This is not a metaphor but a literal promise. The verse emphasizes the certainty and universality of the resurrection, and it underscores that it is the voice of Jesus Christ that will call the dead forth, demonstrating His sovereign authority and power over death.

Jesus’ authority here is not merely that of a prophet or teacher; it is the divine authority of the Son of God, who is the giver of life and the judge of all. This highlights His divine nature and His role as the Judge of all.
