John 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:40 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to Jesus’ “Bread of Life” discourse, which follows His miraculous feeding of the multitude with five loaves and two fish. The crowd, impressed by the miracle, begins to follow Him, but Jesus redirects their attention from physical bread to Himself as the true bread from heaven. Here He corrects their misunderstanding of His mission and reveals the Father’s purpose in sending Him.
Meaning
Jesus begins by declaring, “And this is the will of him that sent me,” grounding His ministry in the Father’s divine plan. The Father’s will centers on the Son: that everyone who “seeth the Son” and “believeth on him” may have everlasting life. The phrase “seeth the Son” implies more than physical sight; it is an intentional, faith-filled gaze—turning one’s attention and trust toward Jesus. Belief involves recognizing Him as the Son of God and the promised Messiah, not merely intellectual assent but a personal, heartfelt commitment to Him as Lord and Savior.
Everlasting life is both a present possession and a future hope. It is not simply unending existence but a quality of life characterized by a deep, intimate relationship with God, free from sin and suffering. Jesus personally guarantees this life, promising, “and I will raise him up at the last day.” This resurrection is a crucial aspect of Christian faith, affirming that death is not the end but a transition to eternal life with God. The Father’s will is accomplished through the Son, and the Son’s resurrection power secures the believer’s future.
Application
This verse calls us to fix our spiritual gaze on Jesus, trusting Him alone for salvation. It assures us that our eternal life is secure in Him, and it gives us hope in the face of death, knowing that He will raise us up at the last day. We can live with confidence, not in our own efforts, but in the will of the Father and the promise of the Son.
Reflection
Consider what it means to “see” the Son with the eyes of faith. Are you looking to Jesus as the source of everlasting life, and are you resting in His promise of resurrection? Let this verse deepen your trust in the Father’s will and the Son’s power.
