John 6:46

Posted on 18 May at 14:37

“Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.”

Context:The verse is part of a larger discourse by Jesus known as the Bread of Life discourse, which begins in John 6:22. In this discourse, Jesus speaks to the crowd who had followed Him after He miraculously fed the five thousand. He uses the metaphor of bread to teach about Himself as the true bread from heaven that gives eternal life.

The Invisibility of God:Jesus begins verse 46 by stating that no one has seen the Father except the one who is from God. This verse highlights the concept of the invisibility of God. Throughout the Bible, it is repeatedly mentioned that God cannot be seen by human eyes (Exodus 33:20, 1 Timothy 6:16). The statement reinforces the idea that the nature of God is beyond human comprehension and physical perception.

Jesus as the One Who Has Seen the Father:The second part of the verse declares that the one who is from God, referring to Jesus Himself, has seen the Father. This statement signifies Jesus’ unique relationship with the Father and His divine nature. As the Son of God, Jesus has an intimate knowledge and understanding of the Father, as He exists in perfect unity with Him (John 10:30, John 14:9).

The Revelation of God:Jesus’ claim to have seen the Father emphasizes His role as the revealer of God. Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently reveals the nature and character of God to humanity. He declares in John 14:9, “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus, being the perfect representation of the Father, came to reveal God’s love, mercy, and truth to mankind.

The Importance of Jesus’ Revelation:Jesus’ statement in John 6:46 carries significant implications for believers. It establishes Jesus as the only mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus made it possible for us to have a relationship with the Father and receive eternal life (John 3:16). He is the bridge that connects us to God, allowing us to experience His presence and understand His character.

Application:John 6:46 encourages believers to seek a deeper knowledge of God through Jesus Christ. Jesus came to reveal the Father’s heart, and studying His life, teachings, and the Word of God helps us grow in our understanding of God’s nature. As we develop a personal relationship with Jesus, we can experience the Father’s love and know Him more intimately.

  • In summary:John 6:46 emphasizes the invisibility of God and highlights Jesus’ unique role as the revealer of the Father. It underscores the importance of seeking a deeper knowledge of God through Jesus Christ, who came to reveal the Father’s nature and offer eternal life.
