John 6:40
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Context:The verse is part of a larger discourse by Jesus, known as the “Bread of Life” discourse, which takes place after Jesus miraculously feeds the multitude with five loaves of bread and two fish. The people were amazed by this miracle and began to follow Jesus. In this discourse, Jesus explains the significance of this miracle and addresses the crowd’s misunderstanding of His true purpose.
Divine Will:Jesus starts by emphasizing that it is the will of God the Father who sent Him. This reveals the divine plan and purpose behind Jesus’ ministry on earth. The ultimate goal of God’s will is that all who see the Son (Jesus) and believe in Him will receive everlasting life. This demonstrates God’s desire for the salvation and eternal well-being of humanity.
Belief in Jesus:The verse highlights the necessity of believing in Jesus for obtaining everlasting life. Belief in Jesus involves recognizing Him as the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and putting trust and faith in Him for salvation. It is not merely intellectual assent but a personal, heartfelt commitment to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Everlasting Life:Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will receive everlasting life. Everlasting life refers to a life that transcends physical death and continues eternally in the presence of God. It is not only an extension of life but also a quality of life characterized by a deep, intimate relationship with God, free from sin and suffering.
Resurrection:Jesus further declares that He will raise up those who believe in Him “at the last day.” This refers to the future resurrection of believers when Jesus returns in glory. The resurrection is a crucial aspect of the Christian faith, affirming that death is not the end but rather a transition to eternal life with God.
