John 8:40

But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

Context

This verse stands within a heated exchange between Jesus and a group of Jews in John 8:31-59. The dispute centers on spiritual lineage and truth. Jesus has just told them that if they were Abraham’s children, they would do the works of Abraham (John 8:39). In verse 40, He directly contrasts their behavior with Abraham’s.

Meaning

Jesus states that they are seeking to kill Him, a man who has told them the truth He heard from God. By calling Himself “a man” who speaks divine truth, Jesus affirms both His genuine humanity and His divine origin. The phrase “this did not Abraham” draws a sharp contrast: Abraham received and responded to God’s word, while these opponents reject it with murderous intent. Their actions prove they are not true children of Abraham, despite their claims.
