“They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on

Verse: “They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” (John 8:39, KJV)

Context:In this passage, Jesus is engaged in a conversation with the Jews who believed in Him. He speaks to them about their claim to be children of Abraham and challenges them to live according to the example set by Abraham.

Understanding Abraham:Abraham is an important figure in the Bible and is known as the father of the Jewish nation. He is considered a man of great faith and obedience to God. God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to bless him and his descendants. Therefore, being a child of Abraham was a point of pride and significance for the Jewish people.

Identification with Abraham:The Jews in this passage claimed to be children of Abraham, implying that they possessed a special relationship with God. They believed that their lineage alone guaranteed their spiritual heritage. However, Jesus challenges this belief by pointing out that true lineage is not merely physical but also spiritual.

Works of Abraham:Jesus asserts that if they were truly children of Abraham, they would demonstrate the same faith and obedience that characterized Abraham’s life. The works of Abraham included his willingness to trust God, leave his homeland, and offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice when God commanded him to do so. Jesus suggests that true children of Abraham would exhibit similar traits of faith, obedience, and righteousness.

Spiritual Lineage:Jesus emphasizes that true spiritual lineage is not determined by physical ancestry but by faith and obedience to God. He implies that being a child of Abraham is not solely a matter of biological descent but requires living according to Abraham’s example of faith.

Application:This passage challenges us to examine our own lives and ask if we are truly living as children of Abraham. It reminds us that a genuine relationship with God is not based on external factors or ancestral heritage alone, but on our personal faith and obedience to God’s Word. True children of God are characterized by their faith in Jesus Christ and the evidence of transformed lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Conclusion:John 8:39 teaches us that our spiritual identity and relationship with God are not based on physical lineage, but on our faith in Jesus Christ and our obedience to God’s Word. It reminds us that true children of God will exhibit the same faith and obedience that characterized Abraham’s life. As followers of Jesus, we are called to live out our faith in tangible ways, reflecting the character of our heavenly Father.

Remember to read and study the surrounding verses to gain a deeper understanding of the context and the full message Jesus conveys in this passage.
