John 8:38

Listen to this article

“I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.”

Context:John 8:38 is part of a larger conversation Jesus had with the Jews in the temple. In this dialogue, Jesus reveals His divine nature and His relationship with the Father. He proclaims that He speaks what He has seen with His Father, contrasting it with what the Jews have seen with their father.

Jesus’ Relationship with the Father:The verse highlights Jesus’ close relationship with the Father. Jesus often emphasized that He and the Father are one (John 10:30) and that He came from the Father (John 16:28). Here, Jesus asserts that He speaks what He has seen with the Father, indicating His intimate knowledge and understanding of the Father’s will and teachings.

Contrast with the Jews’ Father:Jesus contrasts what He has seen with the Father with what the Jews have seen with their father. By “your father,” Jesus is referring to the devil, as He later reveals in John 8:44. Jesus implies that the Jews’ actions and beliefs align with the devil’s agenda, which stands in stark contrast to the truth that Jesus speaks from the Father.

The Importance of Spiritual Discernment:This verse underscores the need for spiritual discernment. Jesus implies that the Jews were unable to discern the truth because they were following the wrong spiritual father. It reminds us that our spiritual perception and understanding are shaped by our relationship with God. Only when we align ourselves with God, through Jesus Christ, can we grasp the truth and discern His will.

Application to Believers:As believers, we should strive to develop a close relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Through prayer, studying the Scriptures, and cultivating a heart of obedience, we can grow in our understanding of God’s will. Like Jesus, we should strive to speak and act in accordance with the Father’s teachings. It is crucial to discern the sources of influence in our lives, ensuring that we are not being led astray by worldly values or the enemy’s deceptions.

Walking in the Truth:John 8:38 encourages us to walk in the truth and reject the lies of the enemy. By aligning ourselves with God, we can have the assurance that we are following the true Father and speaking and living according to His will.

Remember, studying the Bible involves examining the context, cross-referencing related verses, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. These practices help us gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word and its application to our lives.
