John 8:42

Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

Context

In John 8, Jesus speaks with Jewish religious leaders who challenge His authority and question His identity. They claim Abraham as their father and even say God is their Father (John 8:41). Jesus responds by testing that claim: if God truly were their Father, they would love Him.

Meaning

Jesus connects love for God with love for Himself. He is not merely a teacher or prophet; He is the Son who came from the Father. The Greek word translated “proceeded forth” (exēlthon) means He came out from God, and “came” (hēkō) indicates His arrival in the world. His origin is divine, not human.

Jesus also says, “neither came I of myself.” His mission was not self-appointed. The Father sent Him, and He came in obedience to the Father’s will. This shows His complete submission and the unity between the Father and the Son.

Application

Love for Jesus is the evidence of being born of God. Genuine children of God, by adoption and regeneration, will love Christ. Where there is no love for Christ, there is no true regeneration. This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts: do we love Jesus because we know the Father?

Reflection

The religious leaders rejected Jesus, revealing that they did not truly know God as their Father. Their lack of love for Jesus exposed their spiritual condition. For us, love for Jesus is not optional; it is the fruit of a true relationship with God. Let us ask the Spirit to deepen our love for Christ, who came from the Father and was sent for our salvation.
