“And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Verse: “And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?”

Context: John 10 records Jesus’ discourse about being the Good Shepherd. In this chapter, Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd to describe Himself and His relationship with His followers. He contrasts Himself with the hireling who does not truly care for the sheep.

Opposition and Accusations:In verse 20, we see that many of the Jews who heard Jesus speak accused Him of having a devil and being mad (insane or crazy). These accusations were a direct response to Jesus’ claims and teachings, which challenged their traditional understanding of the Scriptures and religious practices.

Spiritual Blindness:The reaction of the people in this verse reveals their spiritual blindness. Despite witnessing Jesus’ miracles and hearing His profound teachings, they were unable to comprehend or accept His message. Their response was to dismiss Him as being possessed by a devil or being mentally unstable. This highlights the hardness of their hearts and their unwillingness to believe in Him as the Messiah.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:The hostility and rejection faced by Jesus were not unexpected. Throughout the Old Testament, various prophecies foretold that the Messiah would face opposition and be despised by His own people (e.g., Psalm 69:8, Isaiah 53:3). The rejection of Jesus by the Jews fulfilled these prophetic words.

Lesson for Believers:This verse serves as a reminder for believers that following Jesus and His teachings may result in opposition and rejection from the world. Just as Jesus faced accusations and hostility, His followers may also face similar challenges. However, we are called to stand firm in our faith and trust in Him, even in the face of opposition.

The Importance of Discernment:The response of the people in this verse also highlights the need for discernment. It is crucial to evaluate teachings and claims in light of God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. The people in this passage failed to discern the truth of Jesus’ message due to their preconceived notions and resistance to change. As believers, we should cultivate a discerning spirit and seek God’s guidance to recognize and follow the voice of our Good Shepherd.

Invitation to Hear:Despite the opposition and accusations, Jesus continued to extend an invitation to the people to hear Him. His words were a call to salvation and eternal life. Today, His invitation still stands, and we are encouraged to listen to His teachings, receive Him as our Savior, and follow Him faithfully.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a fuller understanding of the context and message of John 10. Bible study is enriched by considering various translations, commentaries, and seeking the illumination of the Holy Spirit.
