John 10:21

Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

John 10:21 (KJV)

In John 10, Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep, contrasting Himself with false shepherds and explaining His mission to bring abundant life. Verses 19-21 record the division among the Jews in response to His teaching. Some accuse Him of having a devil and being mad, but others respond with the reasoning recorded in verse 21: His words are not those of a demon-possessed man, and they ask whether a devil can open the eyes of the blind. This event takes place during the festival of Dedication, also known as Hanukkah, as noted in John 10:22.

The people’s statement in verse 21 is a logical defense of Jesus. They recognize that His words carry a quality inconsistent with demonic influence. The rhetorical question, “Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?” points directly to the miracle recorded in John 9, where Jesus gave sight to a man born blind. A demon, they reason, would not perform such a compassionate and powerful work. The nature of Jesus’ words and deeds together testify against the accusation of demon possession.

This verse also highlights the division that Jesus’ ministry causes. The same teaching that leads some to accuse Him of madness leads others to acknowledge the divine origin of His works. The question is not merely about a miracle; it is about what that miracle reveals concerning Jesus’ identity.

The healing of the blind man in John 9 is the immediate background for the question in verse 21. That miracle demonstrated Jesus’ authority over physical blindness and served as a sign pointing to His power to heal spiritual blindness as well. The connection between Jesus’ words and His works is central: His teaching and His miracles consistently testify to the same truth about who He is.

Believers are encouraged to develop spiritual discernment. In a world filled with many voices, Jesus’ words remain the reliable standard for truth. Just as the people in John 10 weighed Jesus’ words against His works, Christians are called to evaluate teachings by comparing them with Scripture and by observing the fruit of those who speak.

Jesus’ power extends beyond the physical realm. He can open eyes to truth, remove spiritual blindness, and guide believers into a deeper understanding of God’s purposes. Approach Him with faith, knowing that He is able to bring healing and transformation.

John 10 invites believers to embrace Jesus as the Son of God. His miracles and His words both point to His divine identity. Trust in His redemptive work and follow Him as the Good Shepherd.

When you hear Jesus’ words, do they lead you to faith or to doubt? The same message that divided the crowd still calls for a response today. Let the consistency of Jesus’ words and works strengthen your confidence in Him, and let His power to open blind eyes encourage you to bring your own areas of spiritual blindness before Him.
