John 10:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.”

Context and Setting: To better understand the verse, it’s important to consider its context and setting. In this verse, John mentions the time and place where Jesus was during a specific event. The event is the feast of the dedication, which took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter.

The Feast of Dedication: The feast of the dedication, also known as Hanukkah or the Festival of Lights, is not explicitly mentioned in the Old Testament because it occurred after the time of the Old Testament writings. The feast commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after it was desecrated by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes in the second century BC. This feast is not a prescribed festival in the Law of Moses but was established by Jewish tradition and history.

Symbolism and Significance: The mention of the feast of the dedication and the fact that it was winter hold symbolic and significant meaning. Winter is a season of darkness and cold, symbolizing spiritual darkness and the need for God’s light. In this context, Jesus, as the Light of the world, is present during this time, bringing hope and salvation to those who believe in Him. The feast of the dedication, which commemorates the rededication of the temple, also points to Jesus as the one who came to cleanse and restore God’s dwelling place among His people.

Jesus’ Presence: John’s mention of the feast and the time of year serves as a backdrop for the events that follow in the subsequent verses. Jesus uses this setting to further reveal His identity and mission as the Good Shepherd. He teaches about His role in caring for His sheep, His relationship with the Father, and the eternal life He offers to those who follow Him.

Application: As we reflect on John 10:22, we can draw several applications for our lives. Firstly, Jesus’ presence brings light and hope to the darkest seasons of our lives. Even in times of spiritual coldness or difficulty, Jesus is with us, offering His guidance and care. Secondly, just as the temple was rededicated, we are called to dedicate ourselves to God and allow Him to cleanse and restore our hearts. Lastly, Jesus’ teachings in John 10 remind us of the importance of recognizing His voice, following Him as our Shepherd, and experiencing the abundant life He offers.

  • In summary: John 10:22 provides us with valuable insights into the setting and context of Jesus’ ministry, emphasizing His presence during a significant Jewish feast. It also carries symbolic significance, highlighting Jesus as the Light of the world and the one who restores and brings hope in times of darkness.
