John 19:25

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

John 19:25 (KJV)

John 19:25 places us at Calvary during the crucifixion of Jesus. The apostle John records that Jesus’ mother, Mary, stood near the cross together with several other women. The Greek verb rendered “stood” is in the pluperfect tense, indicating a standing that was already in progress—they were not merely arriving but had been there, steadfastly present. The phrase “by the cross” suggests they were close enough to see and hear Jesus, a position that required courage given the danger and the agony of the scene.

Mary’s presence at the cross fulfills Simeon’s prophecy in Luke 2:35 that a sword would pierce her own soul. Her faithful endurance, even while witnessing her Son’s suffering, offers a powerful picture of unwavering devotion. The passage also names two other women: Mary’s sister, described as Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. The identity of Mary the wife of Cleophas is uncertain; some traditions associate her with Salome, the mother of James and John, while others link Cleophas with the disciple on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:18), but the text itself does not settle this. Mary Magdalene is a well-known follower of Jesus, delivered from demonic oppression and devoted to His ministry.

The presence of these women contrasts with the absence of the male disciples, underscoring their faithfulness. Their gathering also sets the stage for Jesus’ words to His mother and the beloved disciple in John 19:26-27, where He entrusts her to John’s care. This moment highlights the very human dimension of the crucifixion, reminding believers that the Son of God experienced real physical pain and anguish.

Mary’s steadfast presence teaches the importance of remaining firm in faith during hardship. Her love for Jesus encourages believers to stay faithful to Christ when trials arise. The solidarity of the women at the cross points to the value of Christian community and support; believers are called to offer and seek comfort from one another in difficult times. Finally, the crucifixion itself displays the depth of God’s love and the extent of His sacrifice for humanity, reminding all that salvation is secured through Christ’s willing death on the cross.
