John 19:25

Posted on 18 May at 14:00

Now there stood by the crosse of Iesus, his mother, and his mothers sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25 (KJV)

Historical Context:

John 19:25 records the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion at Calvary. The apostle John notes that Jesus’ mother, Mary, together with several other women, stood near the cross, bearing witness to the suffering and death of the Son of God.

Significance of Mary’s Presence:

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is specifically mentioned as being present at the cross. This underscores her faithfulness and deep love for her Son. Even amid the agony of seeing Him suffer, she did not abandon Him but remained by His side, offering a powerful picture of a mother’s unwavering devotion.

Mary’s Sister and Mary Magdalene:

The passage also identifies two other women: Mary’s sister, described as Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. Tradition often associates Mary’s sister with Salome, the mother of James and John, based on other Gospel accounts, while the text itself names her as the wife of Cleophas. Mary Magdalene is a well‑known follower of Jesus, delivered from demonic oppression and devoted to His ministry.

Reflection on Jesus’ Crucifixion:

The presence of Mary and these women highlights the very human dimension of the crucifixion. It reminds believers that the Son of God experienced real physical pain and anguish. Their gathering also reflects the close‑knit community that surrounded Jesus, even in His darkest hour, providing mutual comfort amid profound sorrow.

Lessons and Applications:

Mary’s steadfast presence teaches the importance of remaining firm in faith during hardship. Her unshakable love for Jesus encourages believers to stay faithful to Christ when trials arise. The solidarity of the women at the cross points to the value of Christian community and support; believers are called to offer and seek comfort from one another in difficult times. Finally, the crucifixion itself displays the depth of God’s love and the extent of His sacrifice for humanity, reminding all that salvation is secured through Christ’s willing death on the cross.
