John 19:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:35

“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!”

Context:John 19:26 is a verse from the Gospel of John, which focuses on the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This specific verse is part of the crucifixion account, where Jesus is hanging on the cross, and it highlights a tender moment between Jesus, His mother Mary, and the disciple whom He loved (traditionally believed to be the apostle John).

Jesus’ Concern for His Mother:While enduring the agony of crucifixion, Jesus demonstrates His deep love and concern for His mother, Mary. In the midst of His suffering, He takes notice of her standing nearby and addresses her as “Woman.” This term of address was not disrespectful but rather a culturally appropriate way to address her. Jesus had a unique understanding of the situation, knowing that His mother would need care and support after His death.

The Significance of the Disciple:Jesus then says to His mother, “Behold thy son!” and to the disciple, “Behold thy mother!” This statement is often interpreted as Jesus entrusting the care of His mother to the disciple standing beside her. It is worth noting that Jesus had other siblings, such as James and Joseph (Matthew 13:55). However, at this point, they are not present, and Jesus entrusts Mary to the disciple whom He loved.

The Symbolic Meaning:This passage holds symbolic significance beyond the immediate context. Jesus, in assigning the care of His mother to the disciple, exemplifies the importance of caring for one another within the Christian community. It teaches us to prioritize the needs of others, even in the face of our own suffering or trials.

Mary’s Role:Mary, as the mother of Jesus, holds a special place in Christian tradition. Throughout the Gospels, she is portrayed as a faithful and devoted follower of Jesus. This particular moment further emphasizes her connection to Jesus and her place in the early Christian community. By entrusting her to the disciple, Jesus ensures that Mary is cared for and embraced as part of the spiritual family.

Application:The verse encourages believers to care for and support one another, especially those who may be in need or vulnerable. It reminds us of the importance of maintaining strong relationships within the community of faith and fulfilling our responsibilities toward one another.

  • In conclusion:John 19:26 showcases Jesus’ care for His mother, Mary, and His concern for the well-being of His disciples. It also teaches us about the significance of caring for one another within the Christian community. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate His love, compassion, and willingness to support and care for others.
