Acts 7:34

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

Acts 7:34 (KJV)

This verse is part of Stephen’s defense before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, shortly before he was stoned to death. Stephen recounts the history of Israel, emphasizing God’s faithfulness and the people’s repeated disobedience. In this particular verse, Stephen refers to Moses and the burning bush incident, where God commissioned Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

The verse opens with the double declaration, “I have seen, I have seen,” which underscores the certainty and depth of God’s awareness. He has seen the affliction of His people and heard their groaning. This is not a distant or detached observation; God is intimately aware of their suffering. The repetition emphasizes that God’s knowledge is sure and His compassion is moved. When God says, “I am come down to deliver them,” He reveals His active intervention in history. He does not merely sympathize from afar; He acts to rescue. The command, “I will send thee into Egypt,” commissions Moses as the human agent of deliverance, showing that God works through chosen individuals to accomplish His purposes.

Stephen’s quotation draws directly from God’s words to Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3:5, 7-8, 10. In that original setting, God declares His awareness of Israel’s suffering and His plan to deliver them. By quoting this passage, Stephen reminds the Jewish leaders that God has always been actively involved in the nation’s affairs, sending messengers to rescue His people in times of need. The deliverance through Moses foreshadows a greater deliverance through Jesus Christ, though the verse itself focuses on God’s immediate action in the Exodus.

Just as God saw and heard the affliction of the Israelites, He is aware of our individual struggles and challenges. We can take comfort in knowing that God is attentive to our circumstances and ready to help us in our times of need. The story of Moses and the Israelites reminds us that God is a deliverer. When we find ourselves in difficult situations or facing bondage, we can trust that God is working behind the scenes to bring about our deliverance. We should rely on His strength and guidance, knowing that He will fulfill His promises. Like Moses, we may be called by God to fulfill a specific task or mission. When God calls us, He equips us and promises His presence. It is essential to heed His call, step out in faith, and be obedient to His leading, knowing that He will empower us to fulfill the purpose He has for our lives. The recounting of God’s intervention in the history of Israel serves as a reminder of His faithfulness throughout the ages. We should reflect on God’s past acts of deliverance and provision in our lives and in the lives of others. This will strengthen our faith and give us confidence in His ability to bring about His purposes.

Acts 7:34 reminds us of God’s awareness, His active involvement in human affairs, and His faithfulness to deliver His people. It encourages us to trust in His provision, respond to His calling, and remember His past acts of deliverance.
